Who we are

STL Neighborhood Foresters is a nonprofit that equips, educates, and empowers volunteers to improve the health and vitality of the St. Louis urban tree canopy.

What is STL Neighborhood Foresters’ mission?

Our mission is to improve STL’s canopy by recruiting, training, and empowering residents to care for and protect City trees.

Our Role in the Community

Hosting our first public events in 2019, we became a 501(c)3 nonprofit in 2021. Our pilot program, Neighborhood Foresters, has now pruned, watered, mulched, and monitored Benton Park West neighborhood trees for two years and expanded to several new neighborhoods.

The Neighborhood Foresters program operates at the neighborhood level, partnering with neighborhood anchor institutions to prioritize community goals and address the needs of the tree canopy as well as the community.

Where would you be located?

This VISTA position will be based at the offices of AmeriCorps St. Louis in the Soulard neighborhood of St. Louis. Members will benefit both from being able to socialize with AmeriCorps members and staff from that program and being near downtown St. Louis.

Our program also partners with existing neighborhood anchor institutions to prioritize community goals and address tree-related needs.

VISTA will:

  • Engage with community members and stakeholders to market the program to target audiences.
  • Lead recruitment and training of volunteers for urban forestry stewardship activities
  • Foster a sense of ownership among volunteers and community members.
  • Design outreach and recruitment strategy
    • Identify key skills, and experiences sought in volunteers
    • Write volunteer task descriptions
    • Develop partnerships with urban forestry professionals and organizations that can assist with the training and support of volunteers.
